There is no evidence that daily use of fiber supplements - such as psyllium (Metamucil, Konsyl and others) or methylcellulose (Citrucel) - is harmful.

Fiber has several health benefits, such as normalizing bowel function and preventing constipation. It is better to obtain fiber from food, because supplements do not provide the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that high-fiber foods provide. In any case, fiber supplements can contribute to achieve the recommended daily intake.

Fiber supplements can cause bloating and gas, at least initially. Therefore, if you have intestinal problems, talk to your doctor before adding a fiber supplement to your diet. It is also a good idea to ask your doctor or pharmacist if these supplements interact with any of the medications you take.

Fiber supplements can reduce the absorption of certain medications, such as aspirin and carbamazepine (Carbatrol, Tegretol), among others. They can also reduce blood sugar levels, so it may be necessary to adjust your medications or insulin if you are diabetic.
